Ecology Action News

Happy New Year from the Ecology Action Center! We know New Year's resolutions can be difficult to make and even more of a struggle to keep. We have the perfect solution: the EAC staff has put together great list of potential resolution options that will be easy to accomplish with our help! Let 2023 be the year you keep your resolution, and make some positive changes to protect the environment at the same time!

Let the EAC help you resolve to:

  • Lower your energy costs and usage through efficiency upgrades! Sign up for a home energy audit from EAC’s professional staff! BNenergybright.org
  • To support our local environment and EAC’s future by contributing to The 2071 Endowment Fund2071fund.png
  • Keep your food waste our of the landfill by starting a backyard compost pile (CompostBN.org), or getting a subscription to the EAC’s community composting program. BNCommunityComposting.org
  • Reduce stormwater runoff and keep contaminants out of our local waterways by installing a rain barrel to collect stormwater to use for your gardens and plants! There will be workshops in the spring and summer! Learn more about stormwater pollution prevention at mCLEANwater.org
  • Get out in nature and get your hands dirty! Sign up to volunteer to help remove invasive plants, and plant native species along Sugar Creek with our Sugar Creek Stewards Program. Workdays are the 3rd Saturday of every month from 9am - noon. The next workday is January 21

  • Engage in fun volunteer activities! Gather a group of 6 friends, family, colleagues, to Storm Drain Stencil with the EAC! Help us remind residents that storm drains drain to streams so we must keep them clean!
  • Be more Yard Smart! Add one Yard Smart practice to your lawn/garden practice to reduce your contributions to stormwater runoffYardSmart2.JPG pollution. Maybe that means adding a rain barrel, including more native plants to your garden, reducing chemical use by using non-chemical alternatives. There are lots of ideas at YardSmart.org and you can contact the EAC staff if you have questions!
  • Go Solar! Reduce your energy bills and invest in clean renewable energy by adding solar to your home or by subscribing to a community solar array! The EAC can help you figure out what kind of solar is best for you, and can connect income-qualifying IL residents to affordable solar through the Illinois Solar for All program! VID_20210521_093759262_exported_33466.jpg
  • Improve air quality for generations to come! Sign up to volunteer with the Tree Corps or donate to our Tree Corps fund and help plant 10,000 trees right here in McLean County! Tree-Corps.org
  • Stop wishful recycling by downloading the FREE Recycle Coach app or using the web version on our website to figure out what is recyclable in McLean County! Don’t like the internet, call us at 309-454-3169 and we will happily answer your questions. RecycleBN.org

2022 was a busy year for all of us, but it never feels much like work when we're busy improving our local environment with all of our wonderful community members.  We hope this lists of resolution ideas helps you find inspiration for 2023! We look forward to continuing all these efforts with your help!

Happy New Year!
